Abstract

BREAKING THE NARROW LENS: BROADENING CAREER PERSPECTIVES FOR PHARM.D. GRADUATES IN A DYNAMIC HEALTHCARE LANDSCAPE


The traditional perception ofcareer paths for Pharm.D. graduates is too often limited to hospital roles,despite the dynamic evolution of healthcare and the broad training provided bypharmacy education. This article argues that breaking this narrow lens andembracing a broader view of career possibilities is essential for maximisingthe impact and potential of Pharm.D. graduates in the current healthcare era.

The Doctor of Pharmacy(Pharm.D.) degree, now widely recognised as the entry-level professionalqualification for pharmacy practice in several countries, represents asignificant evolution in pharmaceutical education. Originally conceptualised asan advanced clinical credential, the Pharm.D. program was formally establishedas the sole entry-level degree in the United States in 2004 and has since beenadopted or adapted in various regions, including Asia and the Middle East.1,2The curriculum was designed to produce practice-ready graduates equipped withstrong foundations in clinical therapeutics, patient care, pharmacovigilance,and evidence-based medicine. Despite this comprehensive training, a persistentand concerning trend remains: many graduates and educators continue to perceivecareer opportunities through a narrow lens, largely confined to hospitalsettings.
