Abstract
A FOCUS ON NOVEL OCULAR DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEM: DISEASES, CHALLENGES, AND OBSTACLES
The challenges facing in the last 10-20 years by pharmacist and formulation and development (F &D) in ophthalmic drug delivery, the ocular drug delivery field is one of the most interesting and challenging amongst all other drug delivery system. Because eye is an vital organ, it’s very difficult to study from a drug delivery point of view. The ophthalmic drug delivery research accelerated advanced towards formulating a novel, safe and patient compliance in the past two decades. Topical eye drop is the most common, convenient and patient compliant route of drug administration to the treat the anterior segment of eye diseases. There are number of factors affecting absorption of drug through ocular route that is different barriers, which become the cause of poor bioavailability, in different eye diseases like conjunctivitis, keratitis, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, trauma however different routes of ocular drug delivery system like conventional including topical, subconjunctival administration and intravitreal administrations of solution, suspension, ointment etc. along with that novel ocular drug delivery system is now developed which overcome the drawback associated with the conventional methods. In this review, we have collected and summarized the different types of eye infections; problems associated with conventional ophthalmic drug delivery, novel or advanced drug delivery, recent nanotechnology-based formulations like niosome, liposome, nanoparticles, dendrimer, nanosuspension, implants etc.
