Abstract
DISEASE MAPS IN AYURVEDA
Knowledge about a disease is obtained in Ayurveda from five features (nidāna pañcaka) such as nidāna, pūrvarūpa, rūpa, upaśaya and samprāpti. The term nidāna means cause and the basic cause of a disease is the enragement of vāta, pitta and kapha (dōṣakōpa). The cause of this aggravation is getting used to healthy diet and behaviour. For example, hemorrhoids appear due to enragement of apāna vāyu resulting from sitting in odd postures, resting on seats that are hard, riding in shaky carriages, excessive sexual intercourse, consumption of incompatible food and withholding of natural urges of voiding urine, stool or flatus. A disease is identified on the basis of the destabilisation of tridōṣa (dōṣakōpa). Dōṣakōpa arises from undesirable dietary habits and behavioral patterns....
