Abstract

IN VITRO ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF THE METHANOLIC EXTRACT OF Sarcostemma acidum (ROXB.) VOIGT

The present work aims to evaluate antioxidant and in-vitro cytotoxic potential of root extracts of Roscoeapurpurea plantagainst human lymphoma cell lines. Tubers of R.purpurea are known to havepolyphenolic compounds and exhibit immuno-modulatory, anti-oxidant andanti-ageing effect. Aspolyphenolics are emerging chemotherapeutic agents, thus, it was pertinent toevaluate antioxidant and in-vitrocytotoxic potential of plant roots usinghumanlymphoma cell lines. Qualitativephytochemical screening test were performed to detect phytoconstituents in theextracts. Antioxidant activity and in-vitrocytotoxic activity of theextracts were measured using DPPH radical scavenging method and lymphoma cell lines Jurkat and u937respectively through MTT assay.

The study showed potent antioxidant activity in aconcentration dependent manner and decreased cell viability and cell growthinhibition in a dose dependent manner. The study indicated that methanol andaqueous extracts of root of Roscoea purpurea possessed vast potential asa medicinal drug especially in treatment of blood cancer/Leukemia.
