Abstract

IN VITRO ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF THE METHANOLIC EXTRACT OF Sarcostemma acidum (ROXB.) VOIGT

The present study was carried out toinvestigate the antioxidant potential of the methanolic spray dried extractof   Sarcostemma Acidum (Roxb) Voigt.Antioxidant activity is a measure of potency of a compound to fight against variousstress induced diseases. It is a measure of free radical scavenging activity. Thesample of the spray dried methanolic extract of the plant was tested usingthree in vitro models namely DPPH radical scavenging assay, Nitric oxidescavenging assay, ABTS assay. The Half maximal inhibitory (IC50) ofthe methanol extract was found to be 120.452 μg/mL for DPPH Assay, 2569.45μg/mL for ABTS assay and 2021.61 μg/mL for Nitric oxide scavenging assay. Thereis a significant correlation between concentration of extract and percentageinhibition of free radicals. The results of the above antioxidant activity studydemonstrated that Sarcostemma acidum (Roxb)Voigt methanolic extractposse’s potent antioxidant activity. This may be due to the bioactiveflavonoids and other phytoconstituents present in the plant.
