Abstract:
The genus Rumexis found to be distributed worldwide. This genus includes more than 250species. Most of the species under this genus contain phytoconstituents like, flavonoids, anthraquinones and triterpenoids. Many species are herbs but shrubsalso included. Roots are usaually taproot but a few are having rhizomes. Very few of them are explored scientifically ( Rumex patentia, Rumex japonicas, Rumexhymenosepalus, Rumex crispus, Rumex dentatus ) .80% methanolic extract of rhizomeRumexabyssinicus reported to havediuretic and analgesic activity. The triterpenoids which are isolated from the Rumex japonicus shows Rat lens Aldosereductase inhibitory activity.Leucodelphinidin and Leucopelargonidin isolatedfrom the Rumex hymenosepalusidentified as a antitumourous substances.Neopodin which is isolated from theethanolic extract of Rumex japonicusexhibited the inhibitoryactivity of osteoclast. This paper presentsthe morphological features, chemical constituents and uses of the different reported species andfolklore uses of Rumex as these canbe explored as potential Nutraceuticals.
Keywords: Rumex species, anthraquinones, triterpenoids, flavonoids, diuretic, Nutraceuticals
